Insurers Request for Plaintiff Social Security Number

CMS finds insurers requests for SSN’s appropriate for Section 111 MMSEA purposes:

In order for CMS to accurately coordinate payments made by Medicare to ensure appropriate payment, Medicare requires the HICN (Health Insurance Claim Number) or the SSN and the EIN (Employer Identification Number).  Medicare has collected this information from beneficiaries since the inception of the Medicare program.  This information is used for the administration of the Medicare program, the beneficiaries personal information is protected by the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule.  Read the rest of this entry »

CMS MMSEA Section 111 Update- 04/21/2010

CMS has updated the “Reporting Do’s and Don’ts” section of their page and have added the revised Teleconference Agenda:

REGISTRATION

  • Please determine the role each individual will play prior to registering. 
  • Authorized Representatives cannot be users of the Section 111 COBSW for any RRE ID and may not obtain a Login ID. 
  • It is absolutely critical to provide information for your Authorized Representative during the New Registration step on the Section 111 Coordination of Benefits Secure Web site (COBSW), and Account Manager information during the Account Setup step.  These must be two different individuals.   • In the listing of 2010 Town Hall Teleconference dates, the announcement of an NGHP Technical Call on April 14 was made in error.  At this time there is no NGHP Technical call scheduled in April 2010.  The April 28 NGHP Policy call will  take place as scheduled.

Revised CMS NGHP Implementation Timetable – Mandatory Reporting

CMS has provided an updated implementation timeline for MMSEA Section 111 reporting:

 • 05/01/2009

Electronic registration via the Section 111 COBSW began for all liability insurance (including self- insurance), no-fault insurance and workers’ compensation RREs (NGHP RREs) excluding foreign RREs.

• 07/01/2009

Test and production Query Input Files accepted for NGHP RREs that completed registration and are in a testing status (the RRE’s signed Profile Report has been received by the COBC).

• 01/01/2010 – 12/31/2010

Claim Input File testing period for all NGHP RREs.  

• 04/05/2010

Electronic registration commences via the Section 111 COBSW for foreign NGHP RREs (those that are based in countries outside the United States and have no Internal Revenue Service-assigned tax identification number and/or US mailing address).

• 01/01/2011 – 03/31/2011

All NGHP RREs must submit initial Section 111 Claim Input production files to the COBC according to assigned file submission timeframes for their RRE IDs.

• 04/01/2011

All NGHP RREs must be reporting production Claim Input Files on a quarterly basis by this date.
